This Week!

Hi everyone!

This week the Grade 4s are working hard on preparing for next week's Education Week/Easter Mass. We are also beginning to learn about Stem and Leaf Plots and Data Management.

In Language, students are creating a Nonfiction Website. I will be posting the link to our website next week for our Open House. I can't wait for you to see the hard work they have put in!

Next week for Education Week, there are many exciting events happening at St. Martin de Porres. Check it out!

Enjoy the rest of the week!

What we are learning this week!

Happy Monday everyone!

I hope you enjoyed the beautiful sunny day on Saturday!

In Math, we are finishing up multiplication and division. There are many ways you can practice these skills at home. Playing games like "Multi Snap" and visiting your student portal at home can allow you to access Prodigy and Mathletics.

In Language, we are finishing creating an interactive book spine and we will be inviting classes to come and check it out! We are also beginning a nonfiction website so stay tuned for the official website address so that you can explore our finished product in the coming weeks.

Scholastic orders are due this Thursday, April 18th and you can order online by searching for my name under "Classroom Teacher'.

Have a great week!

This week! March 4-8th

Hi everyone!

I hope you all have enjoyed your weekend!

In Language, we are currently finishing up procedural writing and students have the opportunity to create their very own "how-to" videos! Many students have asked if they can film the actual "how-to" they have selected such as how to make slime, or how to make origami. I don't mind if they want to bring in their materials in order to make the video more real, however, this is not a requirement. They could sketch out photos or take some videos or pictures at home and put them into their Google Drive to use at school. There is an option to just use hand-drawn images or pictures from the internet as well. I want everyone to have fun with this task!

I can't wait to see the finished products!

See you tomorrow!

Procedural Writing is Fun!

Hi everyone!

I hope you all enjoyed your weekend! You have all been working very hard on your procedural writing projects: how to make a grilled cheese sandwich. I thought it would be fun to make our own grilled cheese sandwiches tomorrow for lunch!

I will be providing the bread, cheese, and margarine. If you would like to bring anything else to go inside your grilled cheese, feel free. Also, if there are any dietary restrictions, please bring in ingredients that are safe for you to eat!

I'm looking forward to lunch tomorrow!

Let's have a great week,

What's Happening in Grade 4!

Hi everyone,

I hope you all enjoyed your long weekend and found the time to relax and hopefully do some reading!

This Friday, it is Pajama Day, and our Winter Play Day. Teams will have the opportunity to play outside and work together to have fun in the snow. It is going to be a wonderful morning! There will even be hot chocolate and yoga!

In Language, students are working on procedural writing. They have been working on a short activity called "How-to make a grilled cheese sandwich". It has been great seeing everyone's creativity as they put their own twist on this classic sandwich.

In Math, we are learning about adding and subtracting four-digit numbers and we will be beginning multiplication and division shortly.

I hope you all have a great week!

Book Orders

Hi everyone,

I hope you are enjoying all of the snow this weekend!

I wanted to take a moment and talk about reading. The one thing I would love for all of the students in our class to do is to read EVERY day for at least 20 minutes.

I hope that you are all working hard to find a book you are interested in and I hope that sending home the Scholastic Book Orders will help!

Parents, you are able to order online as well as sending in the form to me.

You can place your orders online at scholastic.ca/canadaclubs. You just need to search for "Melanie Gill" and from there, you can place your order.

The book orders are DUE February 14th

Happy Reading,

Mrs. Gill

New Class Book

Hi everyone!

This week we will be wrapping up our time unit in Math, and begin learning about symmetry!

We are still working on writing personal narratives, and we will begin reading an amazing book called "Pax."

After reading this book's first chapter, I would like to see what you know about the main character in the book. Click here to fill out the Google Form. You MUST complete this form by Wednesday.

Let's have a great week!

New Year

Happy New Year!

I hope that everyone had a safe and happy holiday season!

Language

Students have been working on writing about their holidays or choosing goals for themselves. They are using KidBlog to post their writing for their classmates to read and comment on. In the near future, we will be opening up our writing to family and other classroom connections so that we can expand our community.

Students are currently in the process of writing a narrative and they are going through the entire writing process; they are brainstorming ideas, making a plan, writing, editing, and self-assessing their stories. Once they are complete and ready for publishing, I will be sharing the stories with you. Stay tuned!

We are also focusing on reading. Students are working on finding books that they can be successful reading independently and working on sustained silent reading. So far I am very impressed.

Math

Students are learning about elapsed time and our learning goal is, "I can estimate and measure how long an event takes."

This will be a fairly short unit and with our learning about time, students have also been working in centres with micro:bit software, binary coding, and small guided math groups.

I hope everyone enjoys the rest of their week!
