Procedural Writing is Fun!

Hi everyone!

I hope you all enjoyed your weekend! You have all been working very hard on your procedural writing projects: how to make a grilled cheese sandwich. I thought it would be fun to make our own grilled cheese sandwiches tomorrow for lunch!

I will be providing the bread, cheese, and margarine. If you would like to bring anything else to go inside your grilled cheese, feel free. Also, if there are any dietary restrictions, please bring in ingredients that are safe for you to eat!

I'm looking forward to lunch tomorrow!

Let's have a great week,

What's Happening in Grade 4!

Hi everyone,

I hope you all enjoyed your long weekend and found the time to relax and hopefully do some reading!

This Friday, it is Pajama Day, and our Winter Play Day. Teams will have the opportunity to play outside and work together to have fun in the snow. It is going to be a wonderful morning! There will even be hot chocolate and yoga!

In Language, students are working on procedural writing. They have been working on a short activity called "How-to make a grilled cheese sandwich". It has been great seeing everyone's creativity as they put their own twist on this classic sandwich.

In Math, we are learning about adding and subtracting four-digit numbers and we will be beginning multiplication and division shortly.

I hope you all have a great week!

Book Orders

Hi everyone,

I hope you are enjoying all of the snow this weekend!

I wanted to take a moment and talk about reading. The one thing I would love for all of the students in our class to do is to read EVERY day for at least 20 minutes.

I hope that you are all working hard to find a book you are interested in and I hope that sending home the Scholastic Book Orders will help!

Parents, you are able to order online as well as sending in the form to me.

You can place your orders online at scholastic.ca/canadaclubs. You just need to search for "Melanie Gill" and from there, you can place your order.

The book orders are DUE February 14th

Happy Reading,

Mrs. Gill

New Class Book

Hi everyone!

This week we will be wrapping up our time unit in Math, and begin learning about symmetry!

We are still working on writing personal narratives, and we will begin reading an amazing book called "Pax."

After reading this book's first chapter, I would like to see what you know about the main character in the book. Click here to fill out the Google Form. You MUST complete this form by Wednesday.

Let's have a great week!

New Year

Happy New Year!

I hope that everyone had a safe and happy holiday season!

Language

Students have been working on writing about their holidays or choosing goals for themselves. They are using KidBlog to post their writing for their classmates to read and comment on. In the near future, we will be opening up our writing to family and other classroom connections so that we can expand our community.

Students are currently in the process of writing a narrative and they are going through the entire writing process; they are brainstorming ideas, making a plan, writing, editing, and self-assessing their stories. Once they are complete and ready for publishing, I will be sharing the stories with you. Stay tuned!

We are also focusing on reading. Students are working on finding books that they can be successful reading independently and working on sustained silent reading. So far I am very impressed.

Math

Students are learning about elapsed time and our learning goal is, "I can estimate and measure how long an event takes."

This will be a fairly short unit and with our learning about time, students have also been working in centres with micro:bit software, binary coding, and small guided math groups.

I hope everyone enjoys the rest of their week!

First Two Weeks

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome to St. Martin de Porres. I have really enjoyed getting to know everyone these past two weeks, and I am really looking forward to the exciting year ahead.

In language, we are beginning narratives and will be writing our own stories. I am very impressed with the creativity I have seen so far!

In math, we will be beginning our measurement unit, as we just finished place value and ordering numbers.

During math today, everyone did very well trying to solve this math puzzle. Give it a try this weekend!

See you Monday!

October Update

Happy Friday!

I hope you have had a wonderful Thanksgiving and have been enjoying all that the fall season has to offer!

We have had such a busy few weeks! I apologize for not updating the blog last week.

We are well on our way with our class blog. The students all know how to login to KidBlog and write/edit their posts. They have really enjoyed being bloggers and have written two posts each so far. They are encouraged to work on their blog posts at home if they do not finish them in the class time or want to improve their work.  We will begin to add comments to each others blogs next week.

We have been participating in the Global Read Aloud where students all around the world participate in reading the same novel at the same time. We have been reading a novel called "A Boy Called Bat". We are all enjoying the novel and have been discussing and working with different writing elements as we go.

In math we are working on comparing and understanding representations of four digit numbers through a variety of tasks and activities. Ask your child to show you how to write a cheque!

Wishing you a wonderful weekend,

-Mrs. O'Connor
